Head Of School
Applications are invited for the headship of the School of Anatomical Sciences, one of seven Schools in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand. The School of Anatomical Sciences comprises of three academic divisions, namely Morphological Anatomy, Structural Biology (Histology), and Biological Anthropology.
The School has a strong legacy of research excellence and significantly contributing to the training of health science and science students at the undergraduate level and the scientific training of postgraduates in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The position offers the potential for a suitable applicant to move the School into a new era of relevance, effectiveness and focus in its teaching and research enterprise.
Responsibilities:
The Head of School will be responsible to provide academic vision and leadership required to enable the School to maintain a position of excellence within the University and in the wider educational context of South Africa.
This will involve the management of all academic activities inclusive of teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, student affairs and administrative matters within the School including Human Resources, Financial Management and General Administration.
The Head of School will be responsible for the development and promotion of academic excellence within the School’s constituent divisions in order to maintain the School’s position of excellence and its diversity of staff.
Qualifications and Experience:
A PhD in an appropriate discipline, post PhD experience in research and postgraduate supervision and extensive experience in university administration at a senior level are essential requirements.
The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the School.
The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of School for a fixed term of 5 years, renewable based on performance. Should the appointee be from outside the University, the appointee would be transferred to a continuous academic post at an appropriate level within the appropriate discipline at the end of their term of office.
The awarding of the title Professor/Associate Professor/Adjunct Professor will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications, research and other academic criteria as determined by the Faculty of Health Sciences guidelines.
