Physical Anthropology Educator

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City is one of the premier science, research and cultural institutions in the country. The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is seeking a part-time Educator of Physical Anthropology to teach science courses for New York City youth in on-site museum programs. Courses are for middle school and high school aged children, and can take many different formats, including a 12-hour Friday afternoon course, a 24-hour after-school research course that meets twice a week and is co-taught with a scientist, a 30-hour middle school institute that runs in the summer and over vacation breaks, and numerous different courses that run on weekends.

Ideal candidates must be knowledgeable and confident with high school level physical anthropology and have experience teaching urban youth. Experience in and ability to teach more than one subfield of Anthropology, including cultural, physical/biological and archeology a major plus. The candidate must be able to learn and deliver courses in a manner that aligns with the Museum’s student- centered pedagogical approach that strives to engage and excite youth through museum-based, hands-on, interactive learning.

Responsibilities may include co-teaching courses alongside an AMNH scientist, so experience with co-teaching considered a plus. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in physical anthropology or a relevant field; a Master’s degree in education or science is a plus. Must be available to work select Saturdays and Sundays, and when working on weekdays, be available to teach until 6:30pm. This position may also occasionally require the candidate to develop curricula around topics in Physical Anthropology. The Educator will report directly to and will be supervised by the Senior Manager of Curriculum and Teaching.

Minimum required qualifications: ● Bachelor Degree, with a focus in physical anthropology or related field ● Experience teaching middle school and/or high school classes in a formal or informal setting ● Experience working with urban youth Preferred qualifications: ● Experience designing curriculum for middle and high school youth considered a plus ● Experience with co-teaching considered a plus
