DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University’s Department of Anthropology invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Biological Anthropology.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. Professional Qualifications: An earned PhD or related terminal degree in Anthropology or related field with an emphasis in Biological Anthropology or related emphasis from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

Expertise in several of the core areas of Biological Anthropology;
Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Potential for teaching excellence that incorporates a variety of active learning methodologies;
Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences (including online graduate courses for the Applied Anthropology MA program);
Ability to begin offering a regular summer field school within two years of appointment;
Record of, or potential for, involving and/or supervising students in research and scholarly activity; and
Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses (major, upper and lower-division, general education and graduate level).

At the time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Evidence of degree(s) is required at time of hire.

Professional Duties: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence that includes effective and innovative pedagogical approaches and active learning. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to teach and supervise research across several major topics in Biological Anthropology and develop their own research program. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students and may include the following courses: an upper-division Human Biology and Evolution course (General Education); upper-division major courses such as Biological Anthropology Lab, Skeletal Biology and Forensics, Paleoanthropology, Primatology, Tropical Ecology and Conservation, and Topics in Evolutionary Medicine; and graduate level courses in the Applied Anthropology MA program.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching; research, creative activity and scholarship; and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

General Information: Dedication to superior instruction of undergraduates is a long-standing tradition at Humboldt State University. The Department of Anthropology is known for providing students with well-rounded degrees and opportunities to undertake research in Archaeology, Cultural and Biological Anthropology. The department is growing with 160 majors and has a strong interest in fostering communication across the sub-disciplines in Anthropology. The department has an Archaeology Lab, a Biological Anthropology Lab, and an integrated Cultural Resources Facility (an active CRM operation). The department runs annual field schools in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology and has a newly instituted ‘limited residency’ M.A. in Applied Anthropology where students attend a Summer Institute and continue their degree online.
