LECTURER FULL-TIME IN INTEGRATED SOCIAL SCIENCES

Integrated Social Sciences (ISS) is an online, interdisciplinary BA completion program offered by the University of Washington’s College of Arts and Sciences. ISS provides unprecedented access, flexibility, and affordability to both returning UW students and new students from across the US. The program offers courses across the full range of social science disciplines as well as a suite of core courses designed to incorporate personalized advising and mentoring that in turn supports student planning, meta-learning and retention. In addition to mastering social science content, ISS majors are expected to develop a learning portfolio which culminates in a capstone project. Program goals are to help students become broadly trained social scientists, purposeful learners, analytical thinkers, globally aware citizens, technologically literate individuals, and workplace-ready job candidates.

We would like to hire up to four lecturers for ISS to start in September 2016. We seek especially innovative educators who want to develop as online teachers and who have the ability and interest to adapt and collaborate in a dynamic team of teachers and advisers. Candidates should have strong online communication and social media skills. They should be able to model and help teach effective writing, critical thinking and rigorous analytical work. They should also be ready to experiment and evolve as teachers working with advisors in supporting student e-portfolio work, mentoring and related efforts at helping students complete their degrees. A PhD in a Social Science discipline is required at time of appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching and service. When hired through a national search, lecturers are eligible for renewable multi-year appointments, promotion, and paid professional leave, among other benefits available to full-time UW faculty members. For more information about ISS please e-mail the program director and search committee chair, Professor Matt Sparke: sparke@uw.edu. Review of applications will begin on March 28th, 2016. Applications should include a letter addressing the candidate’s scholarly and pedagogical qualifications for working in ISS; CV; writing sample; sample syllabus; evidence of teaching success or teaching dossier. Letters of recommendation are not required at the time of application, but will be requested of candidates who advance in the process.
