Primary responsibilities are the teaching of introductory Physical Anthropology and Laboratory in Physical Anthropology though ability to develop and teach other lower division courses in Physical Anthropology is also desired. Major Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility is the teaching of introductory Physical Anthropology and Laboratory in Physical Anthropology, though ability to develop and teach other lower division courses in Physical Anthropology is also desired. Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate and the needs of the Department, other responsibilities may include teaching courses in North American Indian Cultures, California Indians, Medical Anthropology, and Archaeology. The assignment will be 15 class hours per week, and may include day, evening and Saturday classes. Additional responsibilities of Mesa College tenured/tenure-track faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, curriculum review and development, serving on College and District committees, and participating in various departmental and college activities.

Qualifications:

Master’s in anthropology or archaeology
OR
bachelor’s in either of the above AND master’s in sociology, biological sciences, forensic sciences, genetics or paleontology
OR
the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Anthropology from a regionally accredited institution.

The successful candidate should demonstrate evidence of:
• Anthropological theory and subject matter competency.
• Completion of graduate level coursework in Physical Anthropology.
• Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning styles and teaching techniques.
• Recent teaching experience in Anthropology at the lower-division college level and the ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student performance.
• Experience in laboratory classes and/or in incorporating zoo-based observations and assignments in Physical Anthropology classes.
• Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum.
• Effective oral communication and writing ability.
• Continued professional growth in Anthropology.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
• Experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.

Pay Information:

The salary range for this Assistant Professor level position is $5,389.42 – $7,068.05 per month, for the number of months of the assignment. Monthly salary begins with Step A of the Tenured/Tenure-Track College Faculty, Schedule A and subsequent step movement is achieved annually up to the maximum of the Class. Monthly salary may begin with Step B with 1 year prior verified related teaching experience. The highest monthly starting salary would be $7,068.05 with a PhD or 105 semester units beyond the earned Master’s Degree and 1 year full-time prior verified related teaching experience. Note that all new SDCCD College Faculty begin with Assistant Professor level/rank. Overload assignments are paid based on contract parity using the Adjunct/Overload College Classroom and Non-Classroom, Schedules B and C. Salary placement is based solely upon education and experience as outlined in the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement, and it is non-negotiable. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made on the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, will be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Assistant Professors may earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.

With promotions through Associate and Professor levels based upon mastery in the field, teaching of that knowledge, a PhD or equivalent, successful evaluations and tenure track experience, the top range would be $11,210.31.
