Hiring Dept. Information

The Department of Anthropology maintains a four-field anthropology curriculum with nearly 200 majors, supported by 14 full-time faculty, various adjunct and part-time instructors, and five full time staff. It offers both minor and major baccalaureate degrees and a Master of Arts graduate degree program in anthropology with specialization in one of the four sub-fields: socio-cultural, linguistics, archaeological, and biological anthropology. The undergraduate curriculum allows students to choose one of three concentrations: Culture, Language and Society (CLS); Archaeology and Biological Anthropology (ABA); or General Anthropology (GA). The Department also houses the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeological Curation Facility that maintain extensive ethnographic and archaeological collections. The Archaeological Research Center, affiliated with the department provides opportunities for student training and student/faculty research in archaeology supported by external grants and contracts administered from the Center’s on-campus laboratory and other facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities

The Department of Anthropology is seeking a professional specializing in human or non-human primate skeletal morphology, including, but not limited to: functional aspects of anatomy/biomechanics (e.g., locomotor and/or dietary adaptations), taxonomic differences in morphology/biodistance analysis, and/or other aspects of skeletal biology. The individual will work collaboratively with Biological Anthropology and Archaeology faculty to support and contribute to the department as a part of the ABA concentration.

The position requires classroom teaching, research and scholarly activity, student advising and institutional and community service/contributions.

– Teach a lower division major/general education course in Introduction to Biological
Anthropology and the Introduction to Biological Anthropology Laboratory.
– Teach existing upper division major courses in Human Osteology and Fundamentals of
Biological Anthropology, and a Core Graduate Seminar in Biological Anthropology.
– Develop courses in their specialty in support of the major and the Archaeology and Biological
Anthropology (ABA) Concentration.
– Mentor graduate students through the Master of Art’s program,
– Engage in original research and disseminate their research through conference
presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and other means.
– Perform department, college and university service, including student advising, in keeping
with department guidelines.
– Provide documentation for retention, tenure, and promotion to reflect the aforementioned
assignments.

Qualifications
REQUIRED

– Ph.D. in Anthropology or closely related field (e.g., Anatomical or Paleontological Sciences)
by August 2017. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to
complete the doctorate by August 2017 and must demonstrate appropriate Anthropological
knowledge and coursework as shown by curriculum vitae, scholarly research and
publications, college transcripts and teaching experience.
– Demonstrated expertise in human or nonhuman primate skeletal morphology, including, but
not limited to: functional aspects of anatomy/biomechanics (e.g. locomotor and/or dietary
adaptations), taxonomic differences in morphology/biodistance analysis, and/or other aspects
of skeletal biology.
– A broad-based understanding of Biological Anthropology, with a solid foundation in
evolutionary and morphological studies in Biological Anthropology, human osteology, and
scientific approaches to anthropology.
– Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate students.
– Demonstrated experience in conducting original research leading to conference
presentation(s) and/or peer-reviewed publication(s).

PREFERRED:

– Ability and interest to teach one or more of the following classes: Human Paleontology,
Primate Adaptations, and/or Quantitative/Research Methods.
– Experience, ability and/or interest to develop and teach an online/hybrid course in
Introduction to Biological Anthropology, and/or other online anthropology courses for major
and general education.
– Ability to teach large courses and evening courses.
– Ability and interest to develop and teach additional graduate seminars for biological
anthropology and archaeology graduate students;
– Ability to work with a diverse student population.
– Ability and interest to work and engage undergraduate students in research.
– Self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills capable of working collaboratively with
Biological Anthropology and Archaeology faculty as a part of the ABA concentration.

Appointment
This is a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning with the Fall 2017 semester. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and professional experience.
