Associate Osteologist

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is seeking applicants to fill an Associate Osteologist position. The Peabody Museum’s osteological collections primarily include human and nonhuman primate remains, and hominin casts. The Associate Osteologist is responsible for providing research services on osteological collections both in person and by email, selecting and processing analytical samples, processing new collections, and assisting in overseeing digital and other department research initiatives. The position may supervise interns, work-study students, and LHT employees. The position requires occasional on-site evening and weekend hours. Reports to the Senior Osteologist (who also serves as Museum Curator of Osteology and Paleoanthropology). Duties and Responsibilities:
• Prepares for and hosts researcher visits by faculty, visiting scholars, and students.
• Responds to online research and teaching requests, compiles and tracks research and use statistics.
• Assesses collections requested for analytical sampling and selects and documents approved analytical samples. Researches proposed techniques and collections as needed.
• Conducts three-dimensional imaging capture and analysis on collections. Utilizes computer assisted tomography and imaging software programs.
• Supports Museum’s research initiatives and use of collections for exhibitions and public programs.
• Provides training for students, interns, and LHT and may supervise their work in the department.
• Responsible for the daily maintenance and organization of the osteological collections.
• Provides education in using and handling collections held by the Museum.
• Processes collections, including inventory, rehousing, photography and database entries.
• Plans and delivers presentations for visiting classes and special events.
• Contributes information for grant proposals through research and data compilation.
• Represents the Museum at regional or national meetings related to the biological anthropology and museum professions.
