The Department of Social Medicine (Athens campus) is seeking applicants for two tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Full, Associate, or Assistant Professor (i.e., open rank) to strengthen the research of the Diabetes Institute (DI) and the Department of Social Medicine. DI is undergoing an expansion involving numerous enhancement and development initiatives over the next decade, including building new facilities and hiring additional faculty members to complement and expand the research activities of DI scientists. DI’s overarching mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by diabetes and related diseases through innovative basic and translational research, progressive clinical care, transformative education and impactful community outreach. Preference will be given to individuals who perform research that will strengthen DI’s research focus in population health and health policy at the local, national, and/or international levels in the areas of diabetes and obesity (detailed information about DI can be found at www.ohio.edu/diabetes). The successful candidate will hold a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Social Medicine at the Athens campus, a multi-disciplinary department comprised of social scientists who study global health, gerontology, maternal child health, history of medicine, health policy, the social determinants of health, and epidemiology. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidates will be to maintain an externally-funded research program that complements DI’s team-based approach to science and to participate in collaborative multidisciplinary research projects in partnership with other units at OU-HCOM, Ohio University, and with our national and international partners. The successful candidates will also be expected to deliver social medicine lectures on selected topics and/or facilitate small groups.
Full Professor applicants must have a strong record of accomplishment in social science research, current NIH or other extramural funding, and a demonstrated commitment to education of medical and graduate students.
A Ph.D. in public health sciences or related social sciences, such as anthropology, epidemiology, health communications, health policy, public health, sociology, some teaching experience, and evidence of an active research agenda are required. Experience conducting population health, epidemiology or health policy research internationally is desirable.
