Duties & Responsibilities The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is seeking applicants to fill an Associate Osteologist position. The Associate Osteologist is responsible for providing research services on osteological collections both in person and by email, selecting and processing analytical samples, processing new collections, and assisting in overseeing digital and other department research initiatives. The position supervises interns, work-study students, and LHT employees. Reports to the Senior Osteologist (who also serves as Museum Curator of Osteology and Paleoanthropology).

Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepares for and hosts researcher visits by faculty, visiting scholars, and students.
Responds to online research and teaching requests, compiles and tracks research and use statistics.
Assesses collections requested for analytical sampling and selects and documents approved analytical samples.
Conducts three-dimensional imaging analysis via computer assisted tomography on collections.
Supports Museum’s research initiatives and use of collections for exhibitions and public programs.
Processes collections, including inventory, rehousing, photography and database entries (The Museum System).
Provides education in using and handling collections held by the Museum.
Plans and delivers presentations for visiting classes and special events.
Contributes information for grant proposals through research and data compilation.
Represents the Museum at regional or national meetings related to the biological anthropology and museum professions.
Contributes to the Osteology department’s policy and procedures evaluation and development.
Provides training for students, interns, and LHT employees in TMS and in handling osteological collections and supervises their work in the department.
Responsible for the daily maintenance and organization of the osteological collections.

Basic Qualifications MA/MS in biological anthropology, archaeology, or a related field. Three or more years of experience with osteological collections.

Additional Qualifications
Five or more years of experience with osteological collections preferred.
Detailed knowledge of human skeletal biology and experience identifying human skeletal remains.
Excellent analytical skills and facility with basic statistics.
Demonstrated research expertise.
Familiarity with cataloguing and inventory procedures for osteological collections highly preferred.
Experience with computer assisted tomography and/or other three-dimensional imaging techniques highly preferred.
Facility with digital photography and image processing software.
Excellent computer skills; knowledge of relational database software such as The Museum System highly preferred.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; effective oral and written communication skills; attention to detail; collaborative and effective teamwork; proven ability to work independently, establish goals, set priorities, and carry out project tasks with limited direction.
