Description

The University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP), a leader in developing online teaching and learning materials in evolution, the nature and process of science, and global change seeks to hire an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to develop Earth systems science informational graphics and associated curriculum resources in support of UCMP’s Understanding Global Change project. The Understanding Global Change project will produce a content-rich website for K-16 educators to effectively incorporate global change science into an instructional framework. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated research and professional expertise in the following topics:

? Design and review of informational materials, including graphics, in support of conceptual understanding of complex, Earth system science topics.
? Support of education and training in global change science with new and sustainable curriculum units.
? Development of evaluation and assessment tools to aid teachers in more effective science instruction.
? Guiding science writing and design teams to develop scientifically rigorous teaching and learning resources supported by visually-rich, interactive tools and related educational assets.
? Building and training diverse citizen science user communities and seek opportunities to monitor global change locally.

We expect the Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to disseminate the project’s work in developing the Understanding Global Change web site through workshop and conference presentations, proceedings, and journal papers as appropriate for the work.

The Assistant/Associate Project Scientist will work under the supervision of the Director of the UC Museum Paleontology, and will work closely with the Assistant Director for Education and Outreach and the UCMP education and outreach team. This position will be based at the UC Museum of Paleontology on the Berkeley campus.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications
PhD in an Earth, Life or Natural science discipline or equivalent foreign degree at the time of application submission.

Additional Qualifications (required by start date)
? Minimum of 2 years of research and professional experiences since receipt of Ph.D. at start of appointment.
? Demonstrated record of writing and publishing scientific papers, and of writing science articles aimed at a general, public audience.
? Demonstrated experience collaborating with research scientists, science educators, and K-16 science teachers.
? Experience and/or knowledge of educational research, and the evaluation and assessment of learning.
? Capacity for innovation and demonstrated ability to think outside of current paradigms.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
? Expertise in the Earth systems science.
? Experience in professional development training of teachers and informal educators.
? Experience developing and aligning curriculum units with the Next Generation Science Standards.

This position will be full-time for one year. The anticipated start date is September, 2018, though the position will be open until filled. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
