Job Description:
Binghamton University’s Institute for Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (I-GMAP) seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention to begin in August 2020, who will also serve as the coordinator of online programming for the Institute.
The individual selected for this position will join a growing cadre of faculty, professional staff and atrocity prevention practitioners in a welcoming and vibrant intellectual atmosphere dedicated to advancing the scholarship and practice of atrocity prevention. Binghamton University’s I-GMAP is a university-wide endeavor reporting to the Provost. The three-fold mission of the Institute is to: 1) bridge the gap between scholars and practitioners; 2) to break down barriers that prevent disciplines from working together effectively; and 3) to draw upon all the resources of the university to advance atrocity prevention. I-GMAP provides academic programming in Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention in the form of a university-wide undergraduate minor, a graduate certificate housed within a Master of Public Administration program, and a university-wide professional Masters (pending State approval). The Institute provides training to faculty from all disciplines in how to incorporate atrocity prevention into their teaching and research, hosts an annual Frontiers of Prevention conference to bring together scholars and practitioners from around the world for dialogue and collaborative problem solving, hosts practitioners on a regular basis, and engages in other forms of research, education and outreach.
In lieu of the normal 2-2 teaching load, the selected individual will have a 1-1 (or 2-0 or 0-2) teaching load for traditional face-to-face classes in recognition of the responsibilities for designing and delivering online programming. This will include transformation of the current face-to-face Curriculum Development Program for faculty to an online format that will extend beyond Binghamton University and include faculty from other SUNY institutions, as well as creation of new micro-credentialing or certificate programs for civil society prevention actors globally. In the first year, online teaching may be limited to the educational programs for faculty, until approvals are secured and courses are developed for micro-credentialing or practitioner certificates. Once the online programs are operational, the individual in this position will assume primary responsibility for creation, management, facilitation and assessment of online courses.
The position will be housed in I-GMAP and teaching, research and service expectations will rest with the Institute. The individual will be provided a tenure berth in the appropriate academic department(s) for purposes of promotion and tenure reviews; expectations and evaluation criteria for promotion and tenure will be negotiated and clarified at the time of hire.
Requirements:
The successful applicant will have: a PhD or other terminal degree from any relevant discipline (all fields will be considered); a record of scholarly productivity; demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively in both academic and practitioner venues; the ability to teach at least two of the core GMAP courses (Essentials of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention, Comparative Genocides, Micro-Dynamics of Mass Atrocity, International NGOs, Transitional Justice), as well as one or more electives; evidence of teaching effectiveness; and experience designing and delivering online courses or other educational programming.
