Position Overview

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Kansas (KU) invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in anthropological genetics. The successful applicant will have expertise in Next-Gen sequence analysis, cross-disciplinary big data analytical methods, and research and teaching interests in human evolutionary genetics and paleogenomics. The ideal candidate will be expected to creatively use genomic data and methods to address questions in one or more of the following areas: human evolution, regional population histories, diversity of human commensal or prey species, migration, archaic admixture, evolution of pathogens and disease, and/or human adaptability. The successful candidate will also be expected to procure external funding for their research program and teach courses and engage in mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.

40% Teaching/Advising In addition to courses on DNA sequence analysis, population history modeling, and big data analytical methods relevant to the broad spectrum of career interests of students across the discipline, the new faculty member will also be expected to offer courses in biological anthropology and anthropological genetics. The standard teaching expectation is two courses per semester. All faculty are expected to:

● Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, faculty member must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled. ● Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week. ● Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. ● Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. Be available for a minimum of three office hours each week including reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours. ● Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research projects. ● Adhere to program, College, and University policies. ● All faculty members are expected to be active in advising. All faculty members are to take their teaching and advising responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom.

40% Research

The successful candidate will conduct research in human evolutionary genomics to complement existing faculty research foci in human evolutionary genetics, ancient DNA analysis, biogeoarchaeology, the initial peopling of the Western Hemisphere, and regional population history. Geographic area of interest is open, but should complement existing faculty expertise in the circumarctic, the North American mid-continent, and Latin America. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to develop and maintain a research program of national and international stature that substantially advances scholarship and knowledge discovery throughout their career. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals and books, gain extramural support for their research activities, and present findings at national and international professional conferences.

20% Service

Tenure-track faculty members are expected to participate in appropriate professional activities, such as attending faculty meetings, carrying out departmental committee assignments, attending national and international meetings or conferences, serving the College and KU as appropriate, and serving the profession as a reviewer for grant proposals and manuscripts, or as an officer of a professional society.

Collegiality

All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

Required Qualifications • Ph.D. in anthropology or related discipline by the start date of the appointment. • One or more years of postdoctoral research experience. • Commitment and plan to obtain extramural grants to support research and collections. • Commitment to excellence and innovation in the teaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students. • Commitment to teaching courses in Next-Gen sequence analysis, big data analytical methods, and additional courses in areas of expertise.
