The Department of Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites
applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2026. We welcome
applications from candidates engaged in high-quality research in health, migration, and social
inequality in global contexts, including but not limited to areas such as population movements
and health systems, environmental displacement, transnational health governance, critical security
studies, digital ethnography, GIS mapping, community-engaged research, and global health policy.
We are particularly interested in cultural anthropologists or archaeologists whose research interests
will deepen course offerings within the Anthropology Department and will be capable of building
collaborations within the department and/or across the University (e.g., School of International
Service, Health Studies, Environmental Science, Data Science).

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an externally supported program of research,
engage in research training, and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Candidates
should be strongly committed to excellence in both teaching and scholarly research. Responsibilities
will also include participation in department, school, and university activities.

The annual salary range is $90,000-$101,000. Applicants should have a PhD or an anticipated PhD
completion by August 2026. Full review of applications will begin December 1, 2025, and will
continue until the position is filled, subject to ongoing budgetary approval. Please submit
applications via: https://american.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/AU/job/Main-Campus-Washington-

recent teaching evaluations (when possible), and copies of three recently published papers or
working papers. Contact information for three external reference letter writers will be requested
from select applicants later in the search process. Please contact Jean Wogaman at 202-885-1838 or
