The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) (https://shesc.asu.edu) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar under the supervision of the Curator of Collections, Center for Archaeology and Society Repository (CASR). The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will oversee the documentation and organization of archaeological collections subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) from federal lands under the control of Tonto National Forest (TNF). This position will also help with consultation and repatriation efforts with Native American Tribes. A detailed description of the responsibilities as summarized here is provided in Major Responsibilities and Duties below.

This is a full-time fiscal year appointment (12 months), which offers competitive benefits through ASU, including health insurance, and paid vacation and holidays. This position is located at the Arizona State University Tempe campus and has an anticipated start date of January 1, 2025.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Advance and support CASR and SHESC NAGPRA outreach/community projects by:

Review and edit NAGPRA summary reports and Federal Notices generated by project leads and bioarcheologists.
Help document and rehouse ancestral remains and NAGPRA objects in culturally sensitive ways.
Develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for NAGPRA projects and related work.
Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Repatriation, the Assistant NAGPRA Coordinator of Cultural Items, and project leads to determine MNI and AFO designations
Advance and support CASR and SHESC educational programing and activities related to, including:

This position may contribute to the teaching mission of the School in consultation with the Curator of Collections and the SHESC Director.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Anthropology or related fields by the time of appointment.
Applicants must be within five years of receipt of their PhD to be considered.
Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of human skeletal osteology and documentation of human remains.
Demonstrated knowledge of the appropriate handling of curated archaeological collections.
Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or mentoring students, including online learning.
Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
