The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) (https://shesc.asu.edu) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar under the supervision of the Curator of Collections, Center for Archaeology and Society Repository (CASR). The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will oversee the documentation and organization of archaeological collections subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) from non-federal lands under the control of the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR). This position will also help with consultation efforts with Native American Tribes and assist in the teaching of ancestor documentation protocols and bioarcheological methods to relevant CASR staff and students. A detailed description of the responsibilities as summarized here are provided in Major Responsibilities and Duties below.
This is a fiscal year appointment (12 months), which offers competitive benefits through ASU, including health insurance, and paid vacation and holidays. This position is located at the Arizona State University Tempe campus.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Advance and support CASR and SHESC NAGPRA outreach/community projects by:
Review and edit NAGPRA summary reports and Federal Notices generated by project leads and bioarcheologists.
Help rehouse ancestral remains and NAGPRA objects in culturally sensitive ways.
Develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for NAGPRA projects and related work.
Coordinate with the Assistant Director of Repatriation, the Assistant NAGPRA Coordinator of Cultural Items, and project leads to determine MNI and AFO designations
Advance and support CASR and SHESC educational programing and activities related to, including:
Serve as the Assistant NAGPRA Coordinator of Ancestor Documentation and will aid in the oversight of CASR staff and students to ensure respectful and consistent ancestor documentation procedures across active NAGPRA projects.
This position may contribute to the teaching mission of the School in consultation with the Curator of Collections and the SHESC Director.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archeology or related fields by the time of appointment.
Applicants must be within five years of receipt of their PhD to be considered.
Demonstrated knowledge of the appropriate handling of curated archaeological collections.
Demonstrated experience in teaching and/or mentoring students, including online learning.
Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in Human Osteology and Archeology.
Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. Southwest archaeology.
Experience in consultation with Native American Tribes.
NAGPRA-related collections documentation experience.
Demonstrated supervisory experience with staff and student workers.
Evidence of excellent organizational and project management skills.
Experience working independently and collaboratively in a team.
