The Department of Anthropology and the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invite applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Teaching Assistant Professor (TAP) to start August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.
The TAP will contribute to the Department’s commitment to undergraduate teaching and expand offerings in the large-enrollment Introduction to Biological Anthropology course. This is initially a one-year appointment, with annual reappointment and promotion contingent upon performance.
The ideal applicant is one that could contribute positively to the academic life within the Department of Anthropology, including pedagogical mentoring of graduate Teaching Assistants, and whose teaching and/or research background complements and broadens, but does not duplicate, that of the existing department faculty.
The individual appointed to this position will be responsible for teaching four in-person courses per semester, primarily Introduction to Biological Anthropology lectures and labs. The TAP is expected to develop and implement new methods of teaching to reflect changes in the field, update curriculum, construct syllabi, lead classroom instruction, write and administer exams, evaluate students, create interest and understanding among students, and serve on various student-oriented committees. Additionally, the TAP will supervise the Graduate Assistants responsible for delivering the Introduction to Biological Anthropology lab sections and conduct an annual in-person evaluation of Graduate Assistant teaching effectiveness. Based upon demand for courses and availability of funds, and subject to the recommendation of the department chair, summer, intersession, and online assignments can be provided for additional compensation. Summer teaching assignments can provide up
to one-third of the academic year salary and must comply with all university policies and procedures.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
About the Department
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas currently has 15 full time faculty, spanning the subdisciplines of Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, and Cultural Anthropology. Minimum Qualifications
With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate: Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology (or a closely related field) from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment (August 11, 2025).
Preferred Qualifications
1) Demonstrated commitment to building a scholarly environment through teaching college undergraduates, particularly in introductory-level Biological Anthropology lecture and/or laboratory courses.
2) Teaching and/or research background that complements and broadens, but does not duplicate, existing Biological Anthropology faculty.
3) Documented ability to effectively communicate concepts related to Evolutionary Biology and Biological Anthropology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1) Documentation of, or willingness to engage in, pedagogical training related to undergraduate education.
2) Strong evidence of the ability to be an active, involved, and collegial member of a collaborative faculty team.

Annual Salary/Benefits Package: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
