The Sânpetru Bioarchaeology Field school (Transylvania, Romania) – Summer 2026

Applications are open for the Sânpetru Bioarchaeology Field school, an Institute for Field Research (IFR) program run in collaboration with the Brasov Bioarchaeology Project/Terra Ultra Silvam Archaeology and the Institute of Archaeology V. Parvan, Bucharest – offering training in both archaeological excavation and the osteological analysis of a medieval skeletal assemblage at the fortified church of Sânpetru, Transylvania, Romania.
In Summer 2026, applicants can choose between two sessions (S1: June 7 – July 4/S2: July 5 – Aug. 1). This accredited four-week field school is suitable for students with an interest in field archaeology, bioarchaeology and related disciplines (forensic anthropology, human osteology, medieval archaeology).
While also discovering a region full of history and culture, participants will gain hands-on experience in:
– Archaeological excavation and recording methods (please note that we will not excavate burials, unless by chance encounter)
– Ethical handling and post-excavation processing of archaeological finds and skeletal remains
– Basics of human and animal bone identification
– Skeletal and dental anatomy
– Analytical methods for the reconstruction of a population’s biological profile – estimation of sex, age and stature
– Identification of pathological lesions and bone anomalies
– Burial context interpretation
