Workshop: NSF Mock Review
The Biological Anthropology program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) reviews many research proposals each year using NSF’s merit review process. Panelists and outside “ad hoc” reviewers provide input on the intellectual merit and broader impact of proposals, thereby advising the program on the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal. Individuals participating in NSF review panels not only provide an important peer review service to their research community but also gain important understanding of the merit review process that helps them in writing their own proposals and advising others. This half-day workshop, jointly sponsored by NSF and the AABA, introduces postdoctoral researchers and junior faculty to the NSF merit review process through a mock review exercise, presentations, and discussion. Prior to the workshop, participants share their own proposal draft and/or consider past NSF proposals provided by biological anthropology researchers and provide a written review of one or more proposals using the NSF merit review guidelines. Experienced panelists join workshop participants in the mock review of proposals. NSF program directors provide an overview of the merit review process and lead full group discussions based on the mock review experiences.
