The Department of Anthropology, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai’i at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawai’i) invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3) in Biological Anthropology, with a focus in Human Biology. This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure track position, to begin August 1, 2025, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Contribute to the investigation of modern human variation, including the study of human population biodiversity, epidemiology, evolutionary medicine, adaptation, nutrition and diet, energetics and health, and life history, from an anthropological perspective;

Actively contribute to growing our biological anthropology program, as well as contributing to expanding our medical anthropology specialization;

Teach introductory-level as well as upper division and graduate-level classes in biological anthropology and service-related classes; at least some courses offered are expected to expand the offerings in our medical anthropology specialization;

Develop an active research program and a strategic vision that includes fieldwork among the communities of Hawai’i, the Pacific and/or Asia;

Mentor and supervise undergraduate, MA and PhD students;

Provide service to the department, college, university, and relevant professional communities;

Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Anthropology or closely related field from a university of recognized standing;

Demonstrated ability to conduct research and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in biological anthropology;

Record of scholarly and instructional achievement or promise in the field as evidenced by teaching, publications, and research;

Demonstrated ability (or for recent PhDs, demonstrated potential) to successfully compete for extramural and intramural research and training grants (e.g., NIH, NSF, etc.);

A publication record that indicates accomplishment and a promising forward trajectory;

Demonstrated ability to think and work across disciplines and subdisciplines;

Demonstrated ability to successfully engage with local communities.

Desirable Qualifications:

Geographical expertise across the Asia-Pacific region and the Pacific islands, though other regions will be considered.

Demonstrated engagement with important contemporary health issues, including policy-relevant topics such as, for example, health disparities in contemporary populations, and the impacts of epidemics (e.g., COVID-19) on Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Asian communities.

Demonstrated ability to develop comparative projects that situate Hawai’i, the Pacific and/or Asia in a broader global health context.

Demonstrated ability to create opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

Prior teaching and/or postdoctoral experience.

Demonstrated interest in, and the potential to contribute to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
