Anatomy Postdoctoral Fellow
Department of Biomedical Sciences

Summary: The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month Anatomy Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on teaching medical Gross Anatomy. This position is ideal for individuals seeking to develop their academic teaching portfolio while engaging in scholarly research for up to three years.

This position has two primary areas of focus: teaching and research. The Anatomy Postdoctoral Scholar will play a key role in delivering laboratory instruction within the team-taught Gross Anatomy curriculum for both the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MS) programs. Responsibilities include designing and implementing evidence-based educational materials, supporting daily operations related to anatomy instruction, and contributing to the overall educational experience of WVSOM students.

In addition to instructional duties, the fellow is expected to pursue scholarly work within their field. The successful candidate will work closely with faculty mentors to gain experience in curriculum development while also furthering their own research initiatives. Ongoing professional development is essential to the role, with active engagement in academic and educational advancements strongly encouraged.

A completed Doctorate Degree is highly preferred; however, consideration will be given to candidates who have completed all but the doctoral program dissertation, provided there is a clear and short timeline toward completion. Experience in medical histology or imaging is a plus but not required. A strong commitment to teaching excellence is essential, as this is the primary responsibility.

Duties and Responsibilities
WVSOM features an integrated, osteopathic medical curriculum that emphasizes active learning through a range of instructional modalities. Team-teaching is central to the program, and the Anatomy Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplines.

Key responsibilities include:
• Assisting with laboratory or classroom instruction in Gross Anatomy for DO and MS students
• Participating in team-based, integrated teaching methods
• Developing and delivering evidence-based anatomy teaching materials and educational resources
• Utilizing WVSOM’s advanced facilities, including a state-of-the-art anatomy lab, simulation center, team-based learning rooms, and lecture spaces
• Supporting anatomy education through additional institutional resources such as the on-site plastination facility
• Engaging in research or scholarly activity, with access to research facilities

Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with experience at the NIH fellowship and training stipend levels. This is a full-time non-classified position with full state benefits and is exempt from FLSA provisions regarding overtime. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package and coverage for moving expenses.
