2 PhD positions in Evolutionary Sciences (research group “Co-evolution of Tool-use and Language”)

The Humanities Center for Advanced Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools: Tracking Linguistic, Cultural and Biological Trajectories of the Human Past” of the University of Tübingen (http://www.wordsandbones.uni-tuebingen.de) directed by Prof. Dr. Katerina Harvati and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Jäger seeks to fill 2 Ph.D. student positions in Evolutionary Sciences, in the Junior Research Group on the “Co-evolution of Tool-use and Language” (m/f/d)

The student positions will start as soon as possible and run for 3 years, with a possible extension for a fourth year. Salary will be according to the German public service scale TV-L E13, 65%.

Applicants for these positions must hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in prehistoric archaeology, biomechanics, neurology, applied linguistics or a related field. The ideal applicants will have knowledge either of stone-tool knapping techniques and/OR the use of electromyography (EMG) or electroencephalography (EEG). Previous experience in any of these techniques is not a mandatory requirement but will be considered a plus.

The successful applicants will work in an interdisciplinary project focusing on human brain-hand movement coordination during prehistoric stone-tool use, and its potential association with verbal/non-verbal communication.
