Visiting Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology

Application deadline extended to March 15, 2021

The Department of Anthropology at Tulane University invites applications for a visiting assistant professor position in biological anthropology, for an appointment period of July 1, 2021, through June 30, 2022. We seek a broadly trained biological anthropologist who specializes in the study of human biology and behavior from an evolutionary perspective. Topical areas may include (but are not limited to) the study of human nutrition and disease, global health/biomedicine, health inequality, reproduction, genetics and/or human adaptation. Geographic area is open, although special consideration will be given to candidates working in those areas in which Tulane has traditional strengths and/or is currently increasing its curricular offerings, including the Gulf South and Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Candidates must have a strong foundation in evolutionary theory and a proven record of teaching, research, and scholarly success. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching and training. Teaching responsibilities will include six courses per year, including Introduction to Biological Anthropology and Human Adaptation and Variability, as well as new (more specialized) courses related to their own research area.

As a four-field department, we are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests and expertise complement those of other faculty in our department as well as intersect with questions and topics of broad anthropological significance. An interest in establishing connections with interdisciplinary programs in Tulane’s School of Liberal Arts, such as environmental studies, gender and sexuality studies, and Africana Studies, is also strongly desired.

The mission of the Department of Anthropology is to provide undergraduate and graduate instruction in anthropology and to produce innovative research and scholarship. Key to our research and teaching mission is maintaining integration and balance among anthropology’s four fields: biological, cultural, and linguistic anthropology, and archaeology. Through research and publication, and the teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, we strive to advance and disseminate knowledge of the human condition and an appreciation of modern cultural, biological, and linguistic diversity. http://tulane.edu/liberalarts/anthropology/
