Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asian Evolutionary Demography

The Department of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to specialize in the quantitative anthropology or household demography of China to study the effects of market integration on the distribution of various forms of wealth in an NSF-funded collaborative research project. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of Drs. Siobhán Mattison (http://anthropology.unm.edu/people_faculty_siobhan.htm), Mary Shenk (http://faculty.missouri.edu/~shenkm/index.shtml), and Tami Blumenfield (http://www.furman.edu/academics/asianstudies/meet-our-faculty/Pages/Tami-Blumenfield.aspx), and perform the following tasks: (1) take a leading role in preparing for and implementing quantitative fieldwork for approximately six-nine months in Southwest China among the Mosuo/Na, (2) establish and maintain a database that houses project data from two fieldsites; (3) contribute to analysis, write-up, and dissemination of project results; and (4) oversee logistical aspects of project management, including tending to Institutional Review Board (IRB), granting institution, and budgetary issues. The candidate must have training in statistics, and relevant fieldwork experience. Proficiency in spoken Mandarin Chinese prior to the onset of fieldwork is highly desirable. Additional preferred qualifications include knowledge of SQL, R, and evolutionary anthropological or demographic theory. The salary is $40,000 per year, with benefits, for an initial appointment of one year, renewable for one additional year based on performance.
