Curator, Research Archaeologist

The Department of Anthropology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History is seeking an archaeology curator who will perform scientific research and professional curation in Anthropology in the general field of archaeology, specifically human interaction with the environment and human ecology.

The successful candidate will develop research based on Smithsonian collections, expand collections use and build collections, in addition to conducting research on human environmental interactions in the past and present, human ecology, historical ecology, archaeobiology (archaeobotany/zooarchaeology). Research will investigate the complex relationships between humans and the natural environment while also addressing major research themes within anthropology and archaeology. Curators are expected to regularly publish scholarly manuscripts in reviewed journals, participate in departmental and other public programming initiatives, serve as consultant and expert advisor on professional matters in area of expertise, and seek external funding via grants and other funding sources.

This position will be offered as a four-year Federal term position, which is comparable to a tenure-track position, and the position will be filled at the GS-12 level. The museum’s authorized salary range for this position at this time is $76,378 – $81,471 per year. U.S. citizenship is required.
