Doctoral Position in Paleoanthropology and Virtual Anthropology

One Ph.D. student position is available at the University of Tübingen’s DFG Center for Advanced Studies “Words, Bones, Genes, Tools,” directed by Professor Katerina Harvati and Professor Gerhard Jäger. Further information about the DFG Center is available at www.wordsandbones.uni-tuebingen.de

The student position will commence as soon as possible and run for 3 years, with a possible extension for a fourth year. Salary will be according to the German public service scale TV-L E13, 65%.

Applicants for this position must hold a master’s or equivalent degree in paleoanthropology, physical anthropology, or a closely related field. The ideal applicant will have knowledge of virtual anthropology methods, including geometric morphometrics, multivariate statistics, and computed tomography imaging. Previous experience in virtual reconstruction of fossil specimens is particularly desired and will be considered a plus.

The successful applicant will work on the virtual reconstruction of eastern African Middle-Late Pleistocene hominins as the major part of his/her doctoral project. He/she may therefore be required to travel to this part of Africa for analysis of specimens housed in various museums.
