Post Doctoral Scientist

Applications are invited for an NSF-funded position as Postdoctoral Scientist in the Hard Tissue Biology Lab of The George Washington University’s (GW) Center for the Advanced Study of Human Paleobiology. The successful applicant will contribute to an integrated lab and field-based research program that investigates hard tissue evidence of behavioral and developmental responses to early adverse environments, focusing on wild savannah baboons that have been under long-term observational study in the Amboseli Basin of southern Kenya. The Postdoctoral Scientist will be based at GW, but will be co-mentored by Drs. Shannon McFarlin (GW) and David Patterson (University of North Georgia), and will collaborate closely with other grant partners principally based at Duke University, The University of Utah, and National Museums of Kenya.

There will also be opportunities to contribute to ongoing field- and laboratory-based research on the hard tissue biology, trace element and stable isotope ecology, development and life history of wild mountain gorillas and chimpanzees from other long-term study sites, depending on time, interests and funding support.

This NSF-funded position is available for one year, with a second year possible pending successful progress and availability of funds.

Responsibilities of the position:
• Bench work in histologic preparation, microscopy and quantitative analysis of bone and dental tissue microanatomy
• Stable isotope analysis of dental tissues and baboon foods
• Participation in data collection, database management, and data analysis associated with both laboratory- and field-based project activities
• Dissemination of results in peer-reviewed publications and at professional meetings
• Supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students in the lab working on related projects
• Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
