Purdue University, Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor of Anthropology of Tomorrow
Purdue University Department of Anthropology invites applications for two positions to begin August 2019. Assistant/Associate Professor of anthropology, tenure-track with a focus on the Anthropology of Tomorrow. We are seeking dynamic scholars with innovative research programs that address humanity’s grand challenges. We expect to make one open subfield hire at the assistant professor level and one sociocultural anthropology hire at the assistant/associate level.
We seek scholars with a promising record of publications and funding, active research agendas, teaching experience, and a commitment to the application of anthropology. All subfields are encouraged to apply to the assistant professor position, and we welcome creative approaches to the Anthropology of Tomorrow. The successful candidates will join a vibrant department with a focus on and commitment to impactful anthropological inquiry, interdisciplinary scholarly and public engagement, innovative pedagogy, and external funding.
Purdue’s Department of Anthropology is located in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The Anthropology of Tomorrow positions will contribute to Purdue’s strategic areas including integrating data science across the University, the life sciences, Advanced Social & Behavioral Science Research Methodologies at Purdue (AMAP), Center for Aging and the Life Course, the Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion, and the Center for the Environment, Climate Change, Global Food Security. Our faculty regularly join interdisciplinary research teams to work on global challenges, and help the next generation of scholars and professionals develop the integrative analytical toolkits they need for the diverse careers of tomorrow.
Purdue University is a leading research intensive public university (LINK) with a land grant mission and a strong reputation in fields focusing on future-making including data science, engineering, and agriculture. The College of Liberal Arts at Purdue (CLA) includes ten academic units across the social sciences, humanities and arts. CLA (https://www.cla.purdue.edu) is incubating an array of forward thinking programs including the broad integration of liberal arts into the University Curriculum (Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program https://www.cla.purdue.edu/academic/cornerstone/index.html). The program provides an opportunity for Anthropology of Tomorrow scholar-teachers to innovate creative approaches to the 21st century and beyond in thematic areas of conflict resolution and justice, science and technology, environment and sustainability, healthcare and medicine, and management and organization. Purdue’s Department of Anthropology has 15 full-time faculty and offers BA, MS and PhD degrees.
Qualifications: PhD in Anthropology or related field is required at the time of appointment.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Articulate a vision of research and teaching that demonstrates forward thinking anthropology and using and developing social science for solving grand challenges. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) Human Rights/Social Justice, Tourism/Cultural Heritage, Social Implications of Big Data, Human-Animal Interaction, and Design Anthropology.
• Foster research and public engagement linkages with Purdue’s already established programs or centers addressing humanity’s grand challenges
• Demonstrate strong teaching skills and potential to develop innovative and broad undergraduate anthropology courses as well as field-based, interdisciplinary, cross-listed, and/or service learning opportunities at introductory, advanced, and graduate levels
• Teach in Anthropology and courses that are part of the College of Liberal Arts’ Integrated Cornerstone first-year curriculum
• Prepare students for a diversity of careers and mentor their development
• Show evidence of a commitment to diversity and promoting a multicultural environment
• Participate in departmental and university administrative activities
