Associate Lecturer in Anatomy

The Hull York Medical School is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in Anatomy for a fixed term of two years. The post offers exciting opportunities to contribute to the development and expansion of the School and for the successful candidate to develop a career as an Anatomist. The appointee will be based on the York Campus, in PalaeoHub, a new facility that brings together HYMS’ York based anatomists and members of the archaeology department with common interests in human prehistory, organismal evolution and palaeoecology.

This is an exciting time to join Hull York Medical School. Following the Department of Health initiative to expand the number of medical school places in England, Hull York Medical School has been awarded an additional 90 places a year from 2020 which represents a 69% increase in places. For our School, this expansion of undergraduate medical places is a significant milestone in our history. Our expansion will ultimately allow us to produce more doctors who are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to challenges within healthcare and to transform patient care – within our region and beyond.

Role

The appointee will contribute to the administration and delivery of core clinical and topographical human anatomy lectures, laboratories, seminars and tutorials in addition to contributing to scholarship and special interest programmes in functional morphology within our undergraduate (MBBS) programme. The appointee will also be responsible for delivering Master’s teaching and project supervision in the broad area of anatomical variation and functional morphology. Additional duties may include contributions to open days and other key activities within HYMS as well as the development of postgraduate taught programmes with colleagues in PalaeoHub. While the post has a central focus on undergraduate teaching and learning, the candidate will also be expected to supervise Masters projects and so, to actively engage with ongoing research within PalaeoHub.

Reporting via the Director of PalaeoHub to the Director of the Centre for Anatomical and Human Sciences (CAHS), the role holder will enhance the CAHS teaching team and contribute to the strategic development of CAHS, actively contributing to the development, delivery and quality assurance of existing and new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University of York campus.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

The post is ideally suited to postdoctoral candidates with a PhD in organismal musculoskeletal form, function and evolution and with specialist skills in imaging, functional/biomechanical simulation and morphometrics. While prior experience of human anatomy learning and teaching is desirable, the successful candidate will be supported in developing the necessary knowledge and skills to become an effective teacher of this subject.
