The Department of Anthropology at Florida State University seeks an outstanding senior scholar with substantial leadership experience to serve as the next Chair of the Department, anticipated start August 2021. The committee is willing to consider an August 2020 start date pending selected candidate’s availability.

The Department of Anthropology (www.anthro.fsu.edu), with the support of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is expanding its role in the research and teaching missions of the University, which has made it a goal to continue to be one of the top 20 Public Carnegie Research I universities in the country. Building on the success of the recently reopened Master’s program with its high rate of post-degree employment, the Department is now planning to reopen its Doctoral program. Additionally, the Department is planning for new facilities on the main campus. We seek an individual who will lead the Department into this new period of expansion, and who will set a vision for its growth, in alignment with the University’s strategic plan and with the changing role of Anthropology in the world. The Department fully embraces the University’s diversity initiatives, and we seek someone who is dedicated to strengthening our efforts in the areas of recruiting diverse faculty and including students from diverse backgrounds.

Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of Anthropology is required, with a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service. The candidate will normally have produced creative work, professional writing or research in refereed and other professional journals, and be a recognized authority in the field of specialization. Must meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of Professor. Research and teaching fields are open. Preference will be given to scholars whose interests broaden the existing strengths of the faculty, and the department’s multi-decade commitment to four-field anthropology.

Please address any inquiries to the chair of the search committee, Professor Daniel J. Pullen, Department of Classics ([email protected]). Applicants must apply through FSU’s OMNI system at http://jobs.fsu.edu (click on “Browse Job Openings” and search for Job ID #47045). Applications should consist of a cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information for three references in a single PDF file. The application deadline is March 9, 2020.
