Deputy Assistant Director for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences

Dear Colleague:

I am writing to seek your assistance in identifying potential candidates for the position of Deputy Assistant Director for the Directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences. This is a permanent Senior Executive Service (SES) position.

The SBE Deputy Assistant Director serves as a member of the SBE leadership team and as the primary assistant to the Assistant Director in providing leadership and direction to the SBE Directorate, which includes four major components. The Division of Social and Economic Sciences, the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities support a broad range of research and education activities that are rooted within the disciplinary social and behavioral sciences. The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics is the nation’s principal producer of statistics on the education, employment, funding, and activities of scientists and engineers in all sectors of the U.S. economy as well as internationally. These organizations provide the basic structure for SBE activities. They support both disciplinary and interdisciplinary activities and partner effectively with each other, with the other directorates within NSF, with other agencies, and internationally. The Deputy Assistant Director participates with the Assistant Director in the coordination and overall management of Directorate activities with the directorate’s senior managers and a staff of approximately 130.

I look forward to any help you may be able to offer in this search for candidates for this key NSF position. I am especially interested in identifying women, members of minority groups, and persons with disabilities for consideration. The SBE Directorate is embarking on initiatives in interdisciplinary research and instruction, and in new approaches to social, behavioral, and economic collaborative research activities. Social, behavioral and economic scientists with strengths in these areas and with proven leadership and operations management experience will be especially well suited to this position. Information about the SBE Directorate mission and programs is provided on its Home Page: http://www.nsf.gov/dir/index.jsp?org=SBE
