The Department of Biology at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Anatomy/Physiology.
The Biology Department at James Madison University currently serves over 1000 undergraduate majors and 19 Master’s students. The 55 full time faculty members are engaged in teaching and research in a broad range of subdisciplines. Our curriculum offers a wide variety of courses for biology majors, general education and pre-health profession majors, including a 4-semester laboratory-intensive core curriculum. The human anatomy and human physiology courses serve biology, kinesiology, pre-nursing and pre-professional health students as well as graduate programs in Physician Assistant and Occupational Therapy. Teaching facilities include a state-of-the art dissection laboratory, undergraduate anatomy laboratories with prosected human cadavers and extensive anatomical resources, and physiology labs equipped with PowerLab based active learning modules. In addition, the Biology Department has a multi-room, research-grade vivarium to support vertebrate research; a Light microscopy and Imaging facility https://www.jmu.edu/microscopy/; the Center for Genome and Metagenome Studies (CGEMS https://www.jmu.edu/genomics/); and an animal movement and biomechanics laboratory. All facilities provide support to teaching and research activities for students and faculty at all levels, and research activities are supported internally by IACUC and IRB. Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to establish a productive and externally-funded research program involving students (undergraduate and Master’s level) using inclusive and equitable practices in all environments. Anticipated teaching responsibilities will be focused on existing introductory human physiology and human anatomy labs (cadaver-based). Other teaching responsibilities could include upper-level undergraduate and graduate level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise as it directly applies to physiological or anatomical sciences. Consistent with the Departmental mission, the ideal candidate is encouraged to engage in research collaborations within or outside the Biology Department as appropriate. This is a full-time position with an anticipated but negotiable start date of August 2022.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required at the time of appointment and post-doctoral experience is preferred.
