The Department of Anthropology (https://anth.la.psu.edu/) and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu) at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park invite applications for a tenure-line position starting Fall Semester 2022. We aim to hire at the early or mid-career level (Assistant or Associate Professor).

We seek leading researchers at the interface of anthropology and the life sciences whose research uses either anthropological or interdisciplinary life sciences frameworks to study human health. As examples, research programs of interest may include the sociocultural factors and epigenomic processes or the health-related consequences of inequalities, evolutionary medicine-framed investigations of disease risk-related mismatches between past adaptations and present environments, sociocultural-biological studies of human health among diverse human populations, and other approaches.

The Department of Anthropology is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at Penn State. We encourage applicants whose work can contribute toward collaborative scholarship within the department and across the university on initiatives focused on inequality, sustainability and human-environmental systems, and human health.

Candidates for Associate Professor must demonstrate effective teaching at university levels, an ability to obtain external funding, a strong record of academic outputs, and an innovative and integrative research program with a commitment to community engagement. Duties will involve a combination of teaching and research, based on the candidate’s qualifications. Candidates for Assistant Professor must demonstrate potential for effective teaching at university levels, an ability to obtain external funding, a record of academic outputs, and an innovative and integrative research program with a commitment to community engagement. Duties will involve a combination of teaching and research, based on the candidate’s qualifications. PhD required at time of appointment. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity. PhD required at time of appointment.

Candidates must address how their research contributes to both The Department of Anthropology (https://anth.la.psu.edu/) and the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences (https://www.huck.psu.edu). Candidates may also wish to consider how they might integrate with one or more of the Social Sciences Research Institute (https://ssri.psu.edu), Institutes of Energy and the Environment (https://iee.psu.edu), Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse (https://combatsubstanceabuse.ssri.psu.edu), the Rock Ethics Institute (https://rockethics.psu.edu), and other Penn State interdisciplinary programs.

Applicants can apply at https://hr.psu.edu/careers and should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae detailing the candidate’s educational background, employment history, grants, and publications; 3) a statement summarizing the candidate’s research and teaching experience and interests, as well as how they relate to a commitment to diversity and inclusion; and 4) the names, addresses, and emails of three references. Review of applications will begin November 12, 2021.
