The University of Vermont’s Department of Anthropology in The College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology to join our nationally recognized and award-winning faculty. The position will start in the Fall 2023 semester.

The most successful candidates will focus on the intersections between human biological variation, culture, environment, and health disparities in contemporary marginalized populations. Potential specializations include racism and health disparities; biocultural dimensions of health among ethnic minorities and/or Indigenous Peoples; racialization and colonialism in science and medicine; biological effects of social inequities in prevention and treatment; cultural epidemiology; gender, sex, and biology; life history; epigenetics; human development; the role of evolution in human diversity; human adaptability; embodied aspects of environmental injustice; and/or contributions of biological anthropology to the field of global health.

Geographic and cultural area is open, but preference will be given to candidates working in contexts in which legacies of colonialism, continuing structural inequities, and racism play a large role in producing global health disparities today. Scholars focused on Indigenous peoples and/or populations in sub-Saharan Africa, the African diaspora, or Southeast Asia are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: The successful candidate should: Hold a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology, Biological Anthropology, or Medical Anthropology; Show promise toward developing a competitively funded research program; Have the capacity to teach undergraduate courses ranging from biological anthropology and areas in the candidate’s expertise to topics in medical anthropology and interdisciplinary global health;· Be able to successfully mentor and advise undergraduate students, and potentially graduate students, in addition to providing professional contributions and service.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will assume a range of responsibilities that include: Maintaining an active research agenda, securing external funding, and publishing peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books; Teaching and advising undergraduate students in Anthropology and the College’s Health and Society Program; Collaborating with Department faculty in governance, program development, scholarship, and service; Serving as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations; Engaging in service and outreach activities beyond the Department, including in the Health and Society Program, the college, and university, as well as at regional, state, national and international levels.
