Postdoctoral Scholar in Evolutionary Anthropology

The Anthropology Department at the University of California-Santa Barbara, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar position in the area of evolutionary or biocultural anthropology. The position will remain open until filled, but applicants are advised to submit their applications by May 31, 2016 for primary consideration. Start date could be as early as July 1, 2016, but can flexibly begin through January 2017 with potential for 2+ multi-year renewal contingent on satisfactory performance.

Ideal applicants will have broad interests in the evolutionary anthropology of living humans. The applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate on a variety of research projects covering biomedical themes ranging from human biodemography, aging and lifespan, growth, epidemiology of chronic disease in indigenous populations, to biosocial themes emphasizing the role of family dynamics and social networks in buffering against risks, cooperative breeding, evolution of personality, social status, and determinants of psychological well-being. Many of these topics are studied by the Tsimane Health and Life History Project (see http://www.unm.edu/~tsimane and www.anth.ucsb.edu/faculty/gurven for past and current projects) and the successful candidate will work directly with Michael Gurven. Extensive quantitative skills, including multilevel modeling, longitudinal data analysis, database organization and management, and programming are required. Additional mathematical modeling skills and a broad, comparative perspective are also desirable.

Ph.D. in anthropology, demography, human biology, evolutionary biology, biostatistics or related field at the time of appointment is required and applicants must have demonstrated effectiveness in research through peer-reviewed scientific publications.

Terms and conditions of employment are subject to UC policy and any appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Annual salary will be in the range of $46,000 to $53,000, plus $5,000 of research funds, depending on experience and qualifications. Fringe benefits such as medical, dental, disability and vision insurance also included.
