( are conducting a cluster hire for an advanced qualitative
methodologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor ranks, starting in the fall of 2017.
This search is concurrent with a search for two advanced quantitative methodologists as
part of a larger hiring initiative with departments in the College of Health and Human
Sciences (, seeking a total of six tenure‐track or tenured
faculty members (three in each College) to expand campus‐wide expertise in social,
behavioral, and health science statistics and research methodology. For information

The successful candidates for these positions will be expected to contribute to the
research and teaching programs of the departments in which they affiliate, and to
collaborate with others within the cluster and across the university in interdisciplinary
and extramurally funded research. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to an
anticipated multi‐college, shared graduate training platform to prepare students to
address 21st century problems, and including an interdisciplinary graduate certification
program in advanced quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

The College of Liberal Arts at Purdue includes ten academic units across the social
sciences, humanities and arts and is home to or closely affiliated with a wide range of
interdisciplinary programs and research centers, many of these programs focus on
addressing global grand challenges, including: Center on Aging and the Life Course,
Center for Research on Diversity and Inclusion, Center for the Environment, Center on
Religion and Chinese Society, Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, Purdue
Policy Research Institute and the C‐SPANN archives. Successful candidates should have
a Ph.D. in one of the social science disciplines participating in the cluster hiring initiative,
a strong publication record (for Associate‐level applicants) or the promise of a strong
publication record (for Assistant Professors), a research program with high likelihood of
external funding, and the potential for teaching and mentoring excellence. Faculty
responsibilities will include maintaining a productive research program, directing
graduate student research, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in
methodology in their home department as well as cross‐listed courses.

For our qualitative methodologist position in the Cluster, we seek applicants who use
innovative approaches to social and cultural research methods for the contemporary
global context. They will use leading‐edge methods to help understand changes in
societies and cultures and to collaborate with others in building more sustainable
communities; combining information, problem‐solving and answering research
questions in innovative ways. They will demonstrate how they use innovative
methodologies and methods to work across cultural groups, disciplinary lines,
organizational and political contexts, to address human problems or for policy or advocacy work. Expertise may be in one or more of the following: Research Design,
textual, discourse, computer assisted or GIS analyses, multi‐sited work, mixed‐methods,
team‐based, ethnographic, participatory, comparative historical, visual and digital
methods, archival, surveys, mapping, interviews, critical case studies, Evaluation or
Assessment, Digital data curation and management.
